SUMMARY:Longwood Coffee Hr: Pam Silver, Professor, Systems Biology
DESCRIPTION:Join HGWISE to hear from Dr. Pamela Silver, Professor of Systems Biology at HMSand Director of Harvard's Graduate Program in Systems Biology. The Silver Labconducts research in multiple areas, including Synthetic Biology, GenomeOrganization, and Aging-related Disease. Several current projects in the labare directed towards engineering eukaryotic cells to create de novoproteins forpotential therapies, a cellular oscillator that could enable drugs to beadministered cyclically, a cell division counter for aging studies, andalteration of metabolic pathways to produce bio-hydrogen as an economicalalternative energy source.Pam earned her BS in Chemistry and PhD in Biochemistry from the University ofCalifornia, where she was a recipient of an NIH Pre-doctoral Fellowship. Shethen went on to a postdoctoral fellowship in BCMP at HMS, where she was awardedfellowships from The American Cancer Society and The Medical Foundation. Pammoved from Assistant Professorship at Princeton University, where her work wasrecognized with an NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, to Dana-FarberCancer Institute, where she was a Professor of BCMP until 2004, when she wasamong the original faculty who launched the Department of Systems Biology atHMS, and she became the founding director of Harvard's PhD Program in SystemsBiology.Professor Silver has served on many advisory panels, including the NIH Pioneerand Innovator Award Committees, the OSD/NA Biodefense Workshop, the NovartisOncology Program, and the Paul Glenn Institute for Aging Research; and numerouseditorial boards, including Nature Molecular Systems Biology, Genes andDevelopment, Synthetic Biology, and PLoS One. She has served as the Editor ofMolecular Biology of the Cell, and as a member of the Council of the AmericanSociety for Cell Biology and of the Committee for Women in Cell Biology. In addition, Pam co-leads the iGEM (intercollegiate Genetically EngineeredMachines) team of Harvard University, and her commitment to education andmentoring has also been recognized with the Mentoring Award for the BBS PhDprogram. In her free time, Pam enjoys competitive sailing and running; she has trainedfor and run the Boston Marathon several times.Coffee, tea, and a light breakfast are provided at all HGWISE Longwood coffeehours, which meet on alternating Fridays at 10am in TMEC 442.Everyone is encouraged to attend, including men and postdoctoral fellows.Feel free to come late or leave early, if you need to.
