SUMMARY:Longwood Coffee Hour with Dr. Rosalind Segal
DESCRIPTION:Join HGWISE to hear from Dr. Rosalind Segal, Associate Professor of Neurobiology at HMS and member of the Pediatric Oncology Department at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.Professor Segal's lab studies mechanisms by which extracellular stimuli regulate proliferation and survival in the developing nervous system, and how deregulated proliferation, migration, and survival of cells can cause brain tumors and other neurological diseases. One of her research group's key findings is that the brain-derived neurotrophin NT3 can potentially be applied as an apoptosis-inducing therapy against medulloblastoma tumor cells.Roz earned her BA in Biochemistry at Harvard, and her M.D. from Cornell University concurrently with a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from Rockefeller University. Following her residency in Neurology at Beth Israel, Roz completed postdoctoral fellowships in Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT, and in Cell and Molecular Biology at Dana-Farber. Roz has been a P.I. at Dana-Farber since 1998.In addition to conducting award-winning research, Roz is a well-respected and well-loved mentor who serves as the Neuroscience Program's advisor for first-year students and M.D./Ph.D. students.Coffee, tea, and a light breakfast are provided at all HGWISE Longwood coffee hours, which meet on alternating Fridays at 10am in TMEC 442.Everyone is encouraged to attend, including men and postdoctoral fellows.Feel free to come late or leave early, if you need to.
