SUMMARY:Seminar on Implicit Biases with Dr. Mahzarin Banaji
DESCRIPTION:Wed., Nov. 19, 4-5 pm (talk), 5-5:30 pm (Q&A)Science Center Lecture Hall AHow deep are the bounds on human thinking and feeling, and how do theyshape our behavior? In this fascinating and thought-provoking talk,Professor Mahzarin Banaji will lead us through the unconscious mindand the ways in which automatic preferences and stereotypes based onsocial groups (gender, age, class, race/ethnicity, sexuality, nationality, and religion) are expressed without conscious awareness, control, or intention. From such research, Professor Banaji willdiscuss how well-intentioned people behave in ways that deviate fromtheir own conscious intentions. She will use demonstrations of howthe eye sees and how the mind interprets, as well as hands-onexercises to demonstrate ordinary prejudices, including her own. Don'tmiss this great talk by dynamic speaker Professor Mahzarin Banaji!Professor Mahzarin Banaji studies the unconscious nature ofassessments of self and other humans that reflect feelings andknowledge (often unintended) about their social group membership. Fromthese studies, she asks about the social consequences of unintendedthought and feeling. With two others, she maintains an educationalwebsite at www.implicit.harvard.edu that has accumulated over 6million tests measuring automatic attitudes and beliefs about socialgroups.
