Exploring Ways to Deal with Difficult Situations in the Lab: When that happened, I wish I said ____." Or "I wish I knew what to say when ____." An interactive workshop. RSVP Required. In this interactive workshop led by the BSC, participants will work on ways to respond to a variety of difficult situations, from obviously difficult scenarios to more subtle situations where you wonder "did that just happen or am I too sensitive?" Sample scenarios include, but are not limited to, * You make an insightful comment/offer an idea at a meeting, but there's no significant response to it. Five minutes later someone else says the same thing as you, without attributing it to you, and suddenly there's a lot of discussion about it, and credit, that should be given to you, is instead given to the other person.* Someone says something with which you disagree. You respond to it and then the person says you're acting bitchy. * You have a meeting with your P.I. You need to talk about how your research isn't going very well right now. Typically, your P.I. is so busy and preoccupied it's intimidating to bring up bad news.* A labmate of yours occassionally cracks derogatory jokes about women and women scientists, and some of the jokes really offend you.In the workshop, we'll also ponder barriers to responding in the way you might hope--that is, why, even when you know what to do, you don't do it or remember to do it. Finally, We'll discuss different styles of communication and approaches to various situations, review skills and strategies, and create plans for you to practice in your particular situation. To reserve a spot in the workshop, RSVP to Courtney Peterson at cmpeters@fas.harvard.edu. Pre-registration is required.
